Revelstoke Grizzlies asking Minor Hockey Families to Open their Homes!

The Revelstoke Grizzlies Junior B hockey team are looking for families who may be interested in billeting a player (or players) for the 2018-2019 season which runs from September to mid-March or longer depending on the play-off season.

In order to allow our players to take advantage of our hockey program, they require housing assistance from families within Revelstoke to serve as billet families. The billet program also allows our players to complete their high school educations, and/or obtain part-time employment in Revelstoke while pursuing their hockey dreams.

Billet families are an important part of the Revelstoke Grizzlies club and critical to the success of our hockey program. As a billet family you play an important role in the life of the player. By opening your home to a player or players you are providing them with a safe, stable and secure home away from home. Our players become part of your family and can be great role models for young family members to show what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.

Being a billet family is a very rewarding experience where strong bonds are often made between the player, his parents and the billet family. These bonds often extend well into the future!

Frequently Asked Questions/Information about billeting a Revelstoke Grizzlies Junior B Hockey Player

Core standards are described as the minimum standards required by players, parents and the Team in order to be considered as a billet for the Revelstoke Grizzlies. While we appreciate your interest, your application will not be moved to the next level unless each core standard is met.

Your motivation for billeting must be not only to support our KIJHL team, but to provide a safe and healthy home for your player.

Billets must commit to hosting a player in their home for the entire hockey season.

What is a billet family?

• Many players leave home to play Midget and Junior level hockey. A billet or host family home is where a player lives during the season. This is a player’s home-away-from-home.

Are billet families paid?

• A pre-established fee per player per month is paid directly to the billet family. This helps with additional household expenses, especially food and drink. Billet families are asked to provide three meals per day and snacks for their players.

Is there a “typical” host family? Host families may be two-parent families, single-parent families, and, occasionally an “empty nester.”

• The common denominator is a desire by the family to make a difference in a player’s life.

Can a family host more than one player?

• Yes. Two (or more) players can share transportation expenses, and often provide company for one another. The only requirement is that each player has adequate space/living arrangements. Each player is expected to have his own bed, closet or dresser, and acceptable access to a restroom.

How long does a player stay?

• Players arrive in mid-August. The host family commitment is through the end of the hockey season. Sometimes an arrangement is made between the player’s family and the billet family for the player to stay until the end of the school semester; however, this is rare.

Who pays if a player is injured or needs medical attention during his stay?

• Players must have medical insurance from their own families. Billet parents are never responsible for medical payments.

Billets must provide a bed for each player they billet.
• The player must be provided with a clean mattress and bedding.

o You will need to work with your player to ensure his needs are met in quantity and variety of food.

Billets are required to ensure home rules and team rules are followed in the homes.

  • You must be able to communicate well with your player to ensure they understand your “house rules” and the team rules.

  • Do not assume anything.

Evaluation and Review

  • Billet homes may be reviewed at any time during the season by coaching staff or the Billet Coordinator to ensure core standards are being met by both the family and the player.

  • Billet homes will be reviewed at the end of the season by the players through verbal evaluations completed by the coaching staff or Billet Coordinator.

  • A Year-End Questionnaire will be provided to each billet home for feedback on how the player(s) fit into their home.

  • Billet information will be required to be updated annually.
